Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. ~ Michael Pollan, NYT 2007

Our relationship to food in the modern world is one of distance. Of separation. Of a lack of context. Somehow the desire to know where our food came from, to eat things that nourish us, and the need to understand our part in a larger cycle of farming became tainted by concepts of “hippiness” or “liberalism.” Caring about what goes into fulfilling one of our basic animal needs has become a joke, and worrying that maybe our unending hunger might push our threatened farms over the edge is an almost un-American concern.

How did we get to this place?

This website is about the journey of Jess and Jake, a married couple living in San Francisco, and their never-ending obsession with planting a sustainable garden on their tiny plot of urban backyard. The goal is simple: to try to grow as much of their produce as possible – to live as much as possible off the land. And hopefully, in the end, give something back to the land.
